Scrumptious Choc-Chip Lactation Cookies

These cookies are perfect for the breastfeeding mumma with a sweet tooth. I baked a batch of these cookies weekly to ensure a steady supply. Enjoy some fresh cookies within 48 hours, then store the rest in an airtight container in the refrigerator for extended freshness. We love a medicinal cookie with a purpose! 🪷

While these cookies have naturopathic considerations🌱 in the formula, it is mainly the brewer’s yeast that is the essential ‘milk-boosting’ ingredient. Brewer’s yeast is extremely rich in B vitamins which can be quickly used up in the metabolism of protein, fats and carbohydrates to produce breastmilk. The sunflower lecithin in this recipe is optional, however if you are at risk or wanting to prevent mastitis it is highly recommended. Sunflower lecithin is a useful tool to prevent mastitis/clogged ducts as it promotes the smooth flow of milk out of the breasts.

Let’s talk OATS! 🤎 (Avena sativa) - the nervous system replenisher. Oats are relaxing, nourishing, softening and rebuilding to the body and nervous system. All of which is absolutely key for the post-partum person. In tincture form, oats are considered to be ‘meditation in a bottle’, allowing you to tap into that inner peace. Here, they serve as food as medicine, to replenish the nervous system whilst providing nutrition, like fibre and carbohydrates, for that breastmilk production!!

☯️ Goji berries (Lycium barbarum) is known in Traditional Chinese Medicine to balance Yin and Yang in the body. During labour and birth, it is believed that a woman uses much of her Yang (masculine) energy to bring forth new life into the world. The use of goji berries here support the replenishment of Yin (feminine) energies and to bring balance. Additionally, goji berries are powerful antioxidants, supporting nutritive healing after the marathon that is birth.

Chocolate is healthy… right?! 🍫 (Theobrama cocoa) Chocolate is the ancient medicine of the Aztecs. In its richest form, it has the unique ability top open one’s heart and allow the individual to enter a meditative space. It has prebiotics, supports mood and healthy circulation, promotes healthy aging and contains the unique molecule anandamide. Anandamide, from the Sanskrit word ananda, meaning "joy, bliss, delight," works within the body’s endocannabinoid system to promote positive mood and brain cognition.
